2-0 Rosebud-Lott faces challenge in Class A No. 7 Normangee

TRAVIS - Rosebud-Lott’s defense saved the Cougars in last week’s win against Moody.

But that doesn’t mean the Cougars’ coaches were exactly pleased with how their team played. Rosebud-Lott needed a sack at its 10-yard line on the game’s final play to seal the win.

“They bowed up when we had to,” Rosebud-Lott coach Kyle Maxfield said. “But we gave up a whole lot of yards.”

A win’s a win and the Cougars certainly will take it. At 2-0, Rosebud-Lott has already equaled its win total of last season.

But to compile their first three-game winning streak since 2004, the Cougars know that their defense will have to tighten up after allowing more than 400 yards to Moody.

In a battle of unbeatens two weeks into the season, Rosebud-Lott hosts Class A No. 7-ranked Normangee at 7:30 tonight.

The schools agreed to move up the game, originally scheduled for Friday night, because of Hurricane Ike.

The Panthers are led by twins Jordan and Justin Mullinnix, sons of coach Brian Mullinnix. The 5-10, 170-pound Mullinnix twins scored a combined seven touchdowns in a win over Groveton last week.

“They’re extremely talented,” Maxfield said. “The Mullinnix boys, they haven’t been stopped yet. You can tell they’ve played together for a long time.”

Jordan rushed for 152 yards on 14 carries, and Justin had 115 on 11 rushes. Jordan also completed 11 of 19 passes for 226 yards. Those two are big reasons why the Panthers racked up 539 yards total offense, averaging 8.2 yards per carry.

Rosebud-Lott has a pretty solid offense of its own. Led by first-year starting quarterback Ernesto Flores, the Cougars have had success against McGregor and Moody.

Flores (5-10, 160), also his team’s leading rusher, has completed nearly 60 percent of his passes for 302 yards and five touchdowns.

Wide receivers Ben Guthrie and D’Andre Thompson have two touchdown catches apiece.

Just as important as the numbers the Cougars have put up so far is the fact that they have zero turnovers.
