Alexander G. Zaphiris

Private family services for Alexander George Zaphiris, 84, of Temple will be held at a later date.

Mr. Zaphiris died Tuesday, Sept. 8, in a Temple nursing home.

He was born Sept. 11, 1923, to George Zaphiris and Helen Capodistria in Greece. He was raised and educated in Greece and England, moving to the United States in 1953. He obtained a doctorate of Jurisprudence in Greece and became a child psychoanalyst in London, England under the direction of Anna Freud. He worked with the refugee children in Europe after World War II. He married Zina Sergienko in England in 1954. He received a bachelor’s degree and masters of Social Work from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich., and a doctorate in special education from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He worked as a Professor at the University of Denver for 14 years and served as the Associate Dean of the School of Social Work at the University of Houston for 10 years until he retired. He was preceded in death by his wife in July of 1995.

Survivors include three daughters, Helen Zaphiris and Mary Zaphiris, both of Temple and Cathy Zaphiris of San Diego; and two grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home of Temple is in charge of arrangements.
