“When evacuees from Brazoria County arrive in Bell County, some may also choose to bring their pets and keep them out of harm’s way,” said Randall Rakowitz, Texas AgriLife extension agent.
During the processing stage at Bell County Expo Center, pets are processed and welcomed, Rakowitz said.
Staff are working 24 hours a day to accommodate the needs of the furry evacuees who are transported to veterinary clinics for care.
Owners know where their pets are sent and veterinarians have contact information for the owners.
“One component of the Bell County Emergency Management Team includes the Animal Issues committee, which is led by county extension agents with the Texas AgriLife Extension Service,” Rakowitz said.
The group prearranges locations to house pets, horses and high-value livestock during times of crisis, he said. As of 5 p.m. on Thursday, 30 pets had been registered, including dogs, cats and some birds.
Volunteers from the Bell County Extension Office, Community Emergency Response Team and the Bell County Sheriff’s Posse were on hand to help.
