AREA FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Rockdale beats Marlin, moves to 3-0; Gatesville gets past Fairfield; Round Rock roughs up Ellison

ROCKDALE - The Rockdale Tigers used a big interception return by Nic Hammett to ease past the Marlin Bulldogs 36-23 at Tiger Stadium on Thursday night to improve to 3-0.

Hammett picked off a Charles Hitchens pass and returned it 44 yards for a score to give the Tigers a 28-13 lead in the third.

The Bulldogs responded with an Oscar Pena 33-yard field goal and a Justin Stewart 14-yard touchdown run to pull within 28-23 late in the third quarter.

Rockdale quarterback Mark Drake’s 2-yard run with 5:01 remaining made it a two-score game and all but sealed the victory.

The Bulldogs (0-3) never seriously threatened again.

Gatesville 19, Fairfield 15

FAIRFIELD - Quarterback Shane Clark’s 5-yard run late in the fourth quarter helped Gatesville rally past Fairfield at Eagle Stadium.

Clark accounted for all three Fightin’ Hornet scores, throwing touchdown passes to Jake Truss and Josh Janisch. Clark was 8-for-13 for 98 yards and rushed for 52 yards on 13 carries.

Gatesville improved to 2-1 and Fairfield falls to 1-2.

Milano 19, Iola 0

IOLA - After a sluggish first half, the Milano Eagles imposed their will on the Iola Bulldogs.

Thomas Sanders ran for two second-half touchdowns, and Milano rushed for 223 rushed yards in the final two quarters to bury Iola at Bulldog Stadium.

The Eagles (2-1) mustered only 101 yards in the first half, missing out on a pair of scoring chances when they fumbled at the Bulldogs’ 5-yard line and later failed to convert on fourth down at the Iola 15.

Matthew Jentsch’s 3-yard TD run gave Milano a 7-0 lead in the third quarter. Sanders, playing in his first game of the season following a shoulder injury, had fourth-quarter scoring runs of 40 and 5 yards.

The Eagles held the Bulldogs (0-3) to only 112 yards.

Lago Vista 31, Bartlett 8

LAGO VISTA - Bartlett matched Lago Vista almost yard-for-yard, but the Bulldogs couldn’t overcome three turnovers in a loss to the Vikings at Sisemore Field.

The Bulldogs (1-2) totaled 183 yards and held the Vikings (2-0) to 189 but trailed from the opening quarter on. Bartlett lost a pair of fumbles and threw an interception. Lago did not have a turnover.

Killeen Shoemaker 36, Bastrop 15

BASTROP - Jonquese Jordan ran for 112 yards and three touchdowns to help Killeen Shoemaker break into the win column with a victory over Bastrop at Erhard Stadium.

Jordan carried the ball only 13 times but scored on runs of 20, 18 and 2 yards for the Grey Wolves (1-1).

Shoemaker’s Jameill Showers was 6-of-14 passing for 142 yards, including an 86-yard TD pass to Derrick Mays.

The Bears (1-2) were outgained 415 yards to 205 and had to score a pair of late touchdowns to avoid a shutout.

Round Rock 51, Killeen Ellison 14

ROUND ROCK - Killeen Ellison hurt any chances it had of winning its third straight game to open the season with nine turnovers and was blasted by Round Rock at Dragon Stadium.

Six fumbles and three interceptions killed the Eagles (2-1), who had just one first down fewer than the Dragons.

Round Rock (1-1) was up 24-0 in the second quarter before Ellison scored on a 52-yard pass from Kyle Skinner to Marcus DeGrazia. The Eagles’ David Cobb tacked on a 9-yard touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
