AREA FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Academy rips Clifton to stay perfect; Copperas Cove clobbers McKinney Boyd in playoff rematch; Jarrell thrashes Thrall; Buckholts gets big win over Penelope

CLIFTON - Daniel Chaney and Kyle Kuban both returned fumbles for touchdowns as the Academy Bumblebees remained unbeaten with a 27-13 victory over Clifton on Friday night.

Chaney took back a fumble 50 yards for a score at the 3:44 mark of the first quarter, and Kuban scooped up a loose ball and took it in from the 20 early in the second quarter.

Chase Gommert, who threw for 188 yards and rushed for 99, scored from a yard out in the second quarter as the Bees (3-0) led 20-0 at halftime.

Clifton (1-2) scored a pair of third-quarter touchdowns - one on a fumble returen - to close the gap to 20-13.

Later, Kuban went in from the 3 to put the Bees ahead by 14.

Jarrell 46, Thrall 7

THRALL - Aaron Mueller rushed for 160 yards and scored four touchdowns as the Jarrell Cougars buried Thrall 46-7.

Mueller scored on runs of 6, 53, 41 and 10 yards as the Cougars (2-1) scored the first 32 points and led 32-7 at halftime.

Chris Trevino threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Daniel Tucker and ran one in from 45 yards out in the second half. Trevino rushed for 136 yards on 16 carries. Michael Ruis also scored on an 8-yard pass from Tucker Lovelace to cap the whipping of the Tigers (1-2).

Meridian 34, Moody 21

MERIDIAN - The Moody Bearcats matched Meridian blow for blow in the first half but just couldn’t keep up in the second as the Class A Yellowjackets claimed a 34-21 victory.

Moody (1-2) started strong with a 51-yard scoring dash by Nate Wilburn to take a 7-0 lead, but the Yellowjackets came right back with a 47-yard touchdown run by Torrence Allen to knot it. Moody went out front again, this time on a 1-yard run by Walter Hammond, but again Meridian (3-0) rose to the challenge when Terail Sheppard caught a 10-yard pass from Allen to tie it as the first half ended.

Buckholts 38, Penelope 31

BUCKHOLTS - Buckholts handed the Penelope Wolverines their first loss, chalking up a 38-31 come-from-behind victory in six-man action.

Jack Gommert provided the winning score when he caught a 42-yard touchdown pass from William Watson in the fourth quarter.

The Badgers (1-2) jumped to a 16-0 first-half lead on scoring runs of 37 and 1 yards by Joel Mendoza. The Wolverines (2-1) scored the next 24 points, however, to take a 24-16 advantage in the second quarter. The Badgers knotted it at 24 just before the end of the first half when Watson hooked up with Judge Love on a 44-yard scoring pass.

The Badgers regained the lead in the fourth quarter when Watson and Gommert teamed up on a 11-yard touchdown pass. But the Wolverines came back with a 42-yard run to take a 31-30 lead, setting the stage for the Watson-to-Gommert heroics.

Abbott 61, Central Texas Christian CTCS 14

Central Texas Christian suffered one of its most lopsided losses in years as Abbott pounded the Lions 61-14.

Abbott (3-0) scored the first 43 points of the game en route to a 51-point first quarter. The game was stopped at halftime on the 45-point mercy rule in six-man football.

Jeremiah Bergert passed for one touchdown and ran one for the Lions (1-2). Bergert hit Zack Bassett on a 14-yard TD for a first-quarter tally. Bergert broke loose on a 31-yard jaunt in the second.

Cedar Park Summit 57, Holy Trinity Catholic 12

CEDAR PARK - The Holy Trinity Catholic Celtics were denied their first win of the season by the Cedar Park Summit Eagles in a game that ended in the third quarter because of the 45-point mercy rule.

Holy Trinity’s Andrew Couvillon rushed for 79 yards and scored on runs of 7 and 43 yards for the Celtics (0-3).

Granger 56, Valley Mills 0

GRANGER - The Granger Lions scored on a punt return, an interception return and a whole lot of runs en route to a 56-0 victory over Valley Mills.

Bradley Sims returned a punt 50 yards for a first-quarter touchdown, and Kenny Sifuentes had a 97-yard interception return for a score to carry the Lions (2-1). Granger had plenty of offense as well, rushing for 261 yards and never attempting a pass.

Axtell 31, Holland 0

AXTELL - The Holland Hornets dropped their third straight game to open the season as Axtell rolled to a 31-0 victory.

The Longhorns scored in every quarter and led 18-0 at halftime. Axtell’s Weston Topham led all rushers with 111 yards on 15 carries.

Holland managed just 138 yards of offense while Axtell (2-1) rang up more than 300.

Copperas Cove 42, McKinney Boyd 14

MCKINNEY - In a rematch of last year’s Class 4A Division I Region II final, the Copperas Cove Bulldawgs again raked McKinney Boyd 42-14.

Brandin Byrd rushed 26 times for 277 yards and scored two touchdowns. Will Wright added 83 yards on 10 carries and two touchdowns, while Cody Vaughn and Josh Boyce each added a score for the Dawgs (3-0).

San Marcos 41, Lampasas 13

LAMPASAS - San Marcos ran off 20 straight points en route to a 41-13 pasting of Lampasas.

San Marcos (2-1) piled up 427 yards, almost entirely on the ground. The Badgers had 281 yards.

Lampasas (0-3) got on the board in the second quarter when Vann Millican hit Rush Seaver on an 8-yard scoring pass. Brode Dubose, who led all rushers with 112 yards, scored on a 42-yard romp in the fourth for the Badgers.
