Services for A.J. Mercer Jr., 87, of Temple will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Grace Presbyterian Church in Temple with Dr. Thomas Allen officiating.
Private family burial will be in Belfalls Cemetery.
Mr. Mercer died Sunday, Sept. 14, in a local hospital.
He was born April 30, 1921, in Temple to Arthur J. and Pauline (Nelson) Mercer. He earned his BS degree in Sociology from Texas A&M University. He married Ura Hudgens July 22, 1945, in Temple. He served as Captain in the U.S. Army, and then went on to retire from the Texas National Guard. He worked as the Superintendent over the Parks and Recreation Department for the City of Temple for 25 years, and retired in 1984. He was a member of the Lions Club, Board of Director of the City Federation of Women’s Club, Temple-Bell County Retired Teacher’s Association, and President of the Temple Garden Club. He also served on the Keep Temple Beautiful committee and Bell County Garden and Landscape committee. He was an elder member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Temple where he was also a member of O.W.L.S.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Joe Mercer of Monte Alto, and Mike Mercer of Temple; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are being handled by Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Temple.
