The local emergency shelters are full, but there are people who have approached United Way of Central Texas still in need of help.
Two families from the Baytown area came to the United Way office asking for help in feeding their 10 children, including two infants, according to a United Way press release. These families’ homes are flooded and they are staying with relatives until they are allowed to go back home.
In the meantime, neither they nor their caregivers have the means to get food and milk to sustain them. Many families left the coast to come and stay with relatives and are now struggling to find basic needs for the next few weeks.
In response, the United Way and partner agencies are coming together to help.
The Bell County HELP Center will be providing very basic needs like food, diapers and formula to people who are “self evacuees” from the mandatory evacuated areas.
Monday, the HELP Center had a number of families come in seeking assistance, said Judy Morales, Temple HELP Center director. At this time, the HELP Center is not able to assist those already staying in shelters.
Those needing assistance will need to bring identification as well as proof of address (such as a driver’s license) to show they are here from the evacuated areas.
To provide these services, donations from the community are needed. Any bottled water, food, diapers and formula donations can be taken directly to the HELP Center at 11 N. Second St. in Temple.
