The Bees fought off a second-half surge by Austin St. Michael’s to claim a 28-23 non-district victory.
Academy took a 21-10 first-half lead on a pair of rushing touchdowns by quarterback Chase Gommert and a thrilling 95-yard interception return by Chase Reeders with 7 seconds remaining in the first half.
But the Crusaders (2-1) refused to go quietly, as Nick Linton hit Isaac Frost from the 35 to close it to 21-17 in the third quarter. The Bees made it 28-17 on Kyle Kuban’s 82-yard touchdown run, but the Crusaders came right back with a 10-yard run by Mike McNamara to close it to 28-23.
Gommert had 110 yards on 27 carries to lead all rushers, while Kuban added 87 more on just three carries.
Robinson 32, Salado 20
ROBINSON - A stretch of 18 straight second-half points helped lift Robinson to a 32-20 victory over Salado.
Jerod Lutz fired three touchdown passes for Salado, but the Eagles were unable to match the Rockets on the scoreboard.
Lutz hit Trae Liller with an 18-yard touchdown pass to put the Eagles on the board first. Robinson answered with a 31-yard connection from Ruben Martinez to Matt Walker to make it a 7-7 halftime.
Salado (2-2) regained the lead when Lutz found Tyler Wright for 47 yards and a 13-7 advantage.
The Rockets tied it again on a Martinez 20-yarder to Boone Weiss. A 26-yard Michael Wagner field goal was followed by a safety and another scoring pass to Weiss.
Lutz hit Wright again from 42 yards out to draw the Eagles within five, 25-20. But Robinson’s Domonic Degrate scored from the 15 to ice it.
Cameron Yoe 60, Lorena 35
WACO - In a game that featured almost 1,000 yards of combined offense, the Cameron Yoemen got the most of out their yardage.
Steven Townsend threw five touchdown passes as the Yoemen rocketed past Lorena, 60-35.
The Yoemen (2-1) erupted for 26 points in the second quarter to grab a 33-21 halftime lead. Townsend sandwiched two touchdown passes _ a 14-yarder to Justin Sapp and a 41-yarder to Ty Morgan with four seconds left _ around a James Wells 17-yard jaunt and a 34-yard sprint for Townsend.
Townsend was 19-of-22 for 225 yards passing. Wells rushed for 105 yards on 11 carries.
Lorena (2-1) scored in every quarter and was led by Tyler Stewart, who threw for 244 yards and three touchdown passes.
Rosebud-Lott 13, Florence 12
FLORENCE - In the end, it was the sure foot of Neil Rabroker that led Rosebud-Lott to a 13-12 non-district victory over the Florence Buffaloes.
Florence took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter when Ben Katzenmeyer broke loose for a 66-yard touchdown run. The Cougars (4-0) came alive in the third quarter, however, as quarterback Ernesto Flores scored on a 3-yard keeper, and Rabroker added the point after.
Florence (1-3) reclaimed the lead, 12-7, midway through the fourth when Blake Brimer scored on a 6-yard run. The conversion run failed, however, and when Flores hit Ben Guthrie from the 33 with 2:33 remaining in the game, the Cougars had the lead to stay.
Bartlett 41, Hubbard 19
HUBBARD - The Smith-to-Smith combination worked like a charm.
Pierre Smith connected with Michael Smith for three touchdown passes as the Bartlett Bulldogs scored 35 consecutive points to down Hubbard, 41-19.
Down 13-0, the Smiths hooked up for three straight scores from 43, 1 and 37 yards, all in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs (2-2) a 21-13 halftime lead.
Eric Walker kept the momentum going for the Bulldogs by taking the second-half kickoff back 73 yards for a touchdown. Eric Benavides added a 6-yard touchdown in the third for a 35-13 advantage.
Walker added another touchdown on a 29-yard jaunt to cap the scoring.
Pierre Smith completed six of 11 for 114 yards. Walker led Bartlett with 85 yards rushing. Hubbard was paced by Darrett Lang’s 134 rushing yards.
Holland 54, Waco Texas Christian 6
WACO - The Holland Hornets got their first win of the season at the hands of the Waco Texas Christian Stars, taking a 54-6 non-district game at Stars Stadium.
Holland, now 1-3, trusted the reliable arm of quarterback Clayton Ash, who completed 10 of 11 passes for 239 yards and five touchdowns, and he also scored the game’s first on a 20-yard run. Sam Goodnight caught two of the scoring strikes, with the others spread out among Ethan Stroud, Darius Moore, and Gabriel Camacho. Blair Seberson added an 18-yard touchdown for the Hornets.
Ash, ranked third in passing in the area going into the game, raised his season totals to 40-for-84 for 647 yards.
Buckholts 69, Cedar Park Summit 34
CEDAR PARK - The Buckholts Badgers blew open a tight game by outscoring Cedar Park Summit 20-0 in the fourth quarter en route to a 69-34 victory.
Joel Mendoza, William Watson and Allen Shelton scored on runs of 28, 10 and 28 yards, respectively, in the final quarter while the defense shut down the Eagles (2-2).
Mendoza scored three touchdowns and Zach Gommert had four, hauling in three Watson scoring passes to go with a 2-yard run. Mark Hernandez put the Badgers (2-2) on the board first with a 4-yard touchdown run.
Seguin Lifegate 62, Holy Trinity Catholic 42
A scoreless second quarter spelled doom for the Holy Trinity Catholic Celtics, as they dropped a six-man contest to Seguin Lifegate 62-42.
The Falcons (1-2) led 29-20 after the first quarter and added 15 more in the second quarter while holding the Celtics scoreless for the remainder of the half.
The Celtics (0-4) outscored the Falcons in the second half, but it wasn’t enough.
Andrew Couvillon scored six touchdowns for the Celtics, three rushing and three receiving.
Brenham Christian 32, Central Texas Christian 26
BRENHAM - The Central Texas Christian Lions held the lead briefly Friday in their non-district six-man game against Brenham Christian - for 33 seconds.
The Lions (1-3) had just gone ahead 18-16 on a 12-yard run by Jeremiah Bergert at 4:36 in the third quarter. But less than a minute later, the Eagles reclaimed the lead when Ben Dawson - who had already scored two touchdowns - scored his third from the 2 to take a 24-18 lead.
The Eagles (3-0) added another score in the fourth to make it 32-18, and although Brent Reynolds caught a 33-yard scoring pass from Taylor Truitt, it mattered little as the Eagles hung on for the win.
Austin LBJ 23, Killeen Shoemaker 20
KILLEEN - Austin LBJ turned a pair of Killeen Shoemaker turnovers into touchdowns and the Jaguars escaped with a 23-20 victory.
The Grey Wolves (1-2) gave the ball away four times, including three interceptions from Jameill Showers.
Julian Townsend returned a pick 35 yards for a touchdown, and Courtney Moore scooped up a Jonquese Jordan fumble and ran 60 yards for a score to give LBJ (2-2) a 14-7 lead it never relinquished
Dion Demers rushed for 168 yards, Jordan added 121 - including an 82-yard TD run - and Showers 103.
Killeen 18, Pflugerville Connally 7
AUSTIN - Killeen quarterback Michael Cummings ran for 111 yards, passed for 105 and had a hand in all three Kangaroos touchdowns during an 18-7 victory over Pflugerville Connally (0-3).
The Kangaroos (3-1) never trailed and had a shutout working until Jacob Wertz's 2-yard TD run in the fourth quarter for the Cougars (0-3).
Cummings had touchdown tosses of 26 yards to Dane Beasley and 14 yards to Deonte Epps to go with a 6-yard TD scamper.
