But that’s not the case for everybody who’s diagnosed with breast cancer.
“It’s a scary thing,” said Sandra Shaw of Salado. “And I want to help.”
She’s conducting a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation via an auction at her Salado craftshop.
The auction items consist of a $200 scrapbooking weekend retreat at the Lone Star Retreat Center in Georgetown and 20 miniature dresses. The 13-inch paper doll gowns hang on wire frames.
“They’re handmade, absolutely precious,” Ms. Shaw said. “There’s so much detail in each one.”
Though she’s an accomplished craftswoman, Ms. Shaw did not make the gowns.
“I had sent out a ‘Call to Artists’ with emails and posters,” she said. “I had a lot of response from around the area and from other cities like Houston and Dallas.”
Ms. Shaw provided the gown makers with the wire frames that give each figure its shape. The artists were free to use whatever design, color and decoration they wanted.
“All of the proceeds go the Foundation,” Ms. Shaw said.
People can bid by phone at 254-947-8848, in person at 642 N. Main in Salado or online at www.stampsaladotexas.com.
The last day to place a bid will be Sept. 27. Winners will be announced at a reception from 3-6 p.m. Sept. 28 at Ms. Shaw’s craftshop. Light refreshments and punch will be served.
Ms. Shaw’s sister, Carole Podany of Gilbert, Ariz., will be the guest of honor.
“I’m so honored this is being done in my name,” Ms. Gilbert said. “Every year, I participate in the 5K Race for the Cure. I’m glad to be able to do something else for such a great, great cause. I’ll be bringing breast cancer bracelets and M&Ms for everyone who comes.”
