Deer hunting information and restrictions

Archery season begins Saturday in Bell, Milam, Coryell and Lampasas counties and concludes Oct. 31. The general deer hunting season is from Nov. 1 to Jan. 4, 2009.

In Bell County, east of Interstate 35, antlerless deer may be taken by permit only. West of I-35, no permit is required for taking anterless deer, except on managed deer land.

The limit in Milam County is one buck and two antlerless deer. During the general season, a permit is required to take antlerless deer.

The countywide bag limit for Bell, Coryell and Lampasas counties is four, two buck and two anterless, all seasons combined.

Special antler restrictions in Bell, Lampasas and Coryell counties impose regulations for bucks - only one may have an inside antler spread of 13 inches or greater. A legal buck is defined as having a hardened antler protruding through the skin and at least one unbranched antler, or an inside spread measurement between main beams of 13 inches or greater.

To determine if a buck has an inside spread measurement of at least 13 inches, look at the distance from ear-tip to ear-tip on a buck with ears in the alert position. The 13-inch or greater inside spread requirement does not apply to any buck that has an unbranched antler.
