Bryan denies Shoemaker in OT

KILLEEN - The Bryan Vikings overcame a 21-0 halftime deficit to pull off a wild 42-41 victory over Killeen Shoemaker in overtime on Friday in both teams’ District 12-5A opener at Leo Buckley Stadium.

Bryan (3-0) outscored the Grey Wolves 14-0 in the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime at 35.

Albert Garza hit Jeremy Zdunkewicz with a 50-yard touchdown strike with 9:39 left. Monterrell Washington took it in from the 1 to complete a seven-play, 56-yard drive to tie the game with 23 seconds left.

Garza kept on a 12-yard keeper for the first touchdown in overtime and Matt Little added the extra point. Shoemaker (1-3) answered with Jameill Showers hitting Derrick Mays with a 15-yard score.

The Viking defense stopped Dion Demers on a two-point conversion attempt to preserve the win.

Salado 45

Florence 0

FLORENCE - Following disappointing back-to-back losses, the Salado Eagles used a three-touchdown night by Tyler Wright to bounce back with a 45-0 whitewash of Florence in a District 25-2A opener.

Wright scored on runs of 23, 30 and 38 to finish with 111 yards.

The Eagles defense suffocated the Buffaloes, giving up just 68 total yards.

Salado is 3-2 overall and Florence dips to 1-4.

Rosebud-Lott 53

Riesel 0

TRAVIS - After easing past their first four opponents, the Rosebud-Lott Cougars enjoyed the fruits of a blowout victory.

Ernesto Flores rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another as the Cougars ran away from Riesel 53-0 on homecoming.

Rosebud-Lott (5-0) rang up 434 yards of total offense while holding the Indians (1-4) to 142.

Hamilton 59

Moody 12

HAMILTON - Moody was undone by consecutive 21-point quarters from Hamilton as the Bearcats dropped their District 16-2A opener 59-12.

The Bearcats (1-3) outgained the Bulldogs 289 yards to 203, but Hamilton (2-2) posted three touchdowns in the second and third quarters to take control.

Moody’s Joe Owen rushed for 120 yards, including a 70-yard scoring run, and Nate Wilburn had a 65-yard TD run as part of his 90-yard effort.

CTCS 34

RR Christian 30

ROUND ROCK - Caleb Paschall scored three touchdowns to help the Central Texas Christian Lions hold off the Round Rock Christian Crusaders 34-30.

CTCS (2-3) posted 22 first-quarter points but suffered through a scoring drought before getting an 11-yard touchdown run from Taylor Truitt and a 1-yard scoring pass from Jeremiah Bergert to Zach Bassett in the final period.

The Crusaders (1-3) used two Gabe Fernandez TD runs and a Matt Contreras scoring scamper to take a 24-22 lead before CTCS went back on top for good.

Buckholts 52

SA Town East 0

BUCKHOLTS - The Buckholts Badgers scored on every possession and rolled to a 52-0 win over San Antonio Town East in a non-district six-man game at Jim Hauk Field that ended at halftime because of the mercy rule.

The Badgers (3-2) received three touchdown runs from Joell Mendoza, and Jonathan Pursche added two. Quarterback William Watson threw for a touchdown and returned an interception for another score.

The Eagles dropped to 2-2.

Holland 33

Austin Regents 20

HOLLAND - Clayton Ash threw four touchdown passes and ran for another as the Holland Hornets notched their second win of the season 33-20 over Austin Regents.

Ash hit Ethan Stroud on three of the scoring tosses - two from 11 yards and another from 45. Ash also found Sammy Goodnight on a 42-yard strike.

Stroud caught 10 passes for 194 yards. Ash led all rushers with 121 yards on 18 carries.

Holland moves to 2-3 overall going into district play next week, while Regents slips to 0-3.

Normangee 20

Bartlett 18

BARTLETT - The Normangee Panthers posted 20 first-half points and held on to beat Bartlett 20-18 at Bulldog Stadium.

Bartlett (2-3) went on top in the first quarter when Pierre Smith hit Michael Smith with a 75-yard touchdown pass and a 6-0 lead.

The Panthers (3-2) answered with a pair of Justin Mullinnix-to-Whitley Reed touchdown passes of 53 and 20 yards, respectively.

The teams traded touchdowns before the half with Bartlett’s Eric Benavides scoring from the 23. Mullinnix ran in from the 3 to make it 20-12 at halftime.

Eric Walker escaped for a 35-yard touchdown rush at the 8:39 mark of the third quarter, but the Bulldogs were stopped on the two-point conversion for the tie.

Burton 41

Granger 0

BURTON - The Granger Lions ran into a buzzsaw in Burton, falling 41-0.

Burton rushed for 452 yards and did not attempt a pass.

Gabriel Patterson and Daniel Patterson scored two touchdowns apiece to pace the Panthers.

Burton (3-1) held the usually potent Lions (2-2) to 180 yards of offense.

Milano 42

St. Joseph 21

MILANO - The Milano Eagles ran off their fourth win in five games by topping Bryan St. Joseph 42-21 at Pruitt Field.

Thomas Sanders and Matthew Jentsch combined for five of the six Eagle touchdowns.

Josh Smith recovered a fumble early in the fourth to set up Jentsch’s 27-yarder with 10:06 to play. Jentsch ran in the two-point conversion to make it 35-21.

Waco Connally 35

Gatesville 23

WACO - Although Gatesville piled up almost 400 yards of offense, five turnovers proved to be the Hornets’ undoing.

Waco Connally carried a 28-10 lead into the fourth quarter and held on for a 35-23 victory over the Hornets at Mac Peoples Stadium.

Gatesville (3-2) grabbed a 10-7 lead in the second quarter after a 29-yard field goal from Hunter Worley and a 2-yard touchdown plunge by Cody Sheets.

The Cadets (2-2) ran off 21 straight points. Gatesville closed the gap to 28-23 with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns, but Williams hit Jerry Johnson on a 40-yard connection to seal the win for the Cadets.

No. 1 Lake Travis 50

Killeen 9

AUSTIN - Class 4A No. 1 Austin Lake Travis used three touchdown passes from quarterback Garrett Gilbert to rout Killeen 50-9 in the District 25-4A opener at Lake Travis ISD Stadium.

Gilbert threw touchdowns to Cade McCrary, Michael Brewer and Chris Aydam, and added a 1-yard TD run for the 5-0 Cavaliers.

The Kangaroos’ Michael Cummings accounted for 257 yards of offense. Killeen fell to 3-2.
