Sam P. Peebles Jr.

ROCKDALE — Memorial services for Sam P. Peebles Jr., 87, of Rockdale will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Rockdale with the Rev. Ann Matthews officiating.

Mr. Peebles died Friday, Sept. 26, at his home.

He was born May 27, 1921, to Sam P. Peebles Sr. and Mary Ann Johnston in Lexington. He graduated from Lexington High School in 1938 and from Baylor University in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy 1942-46, serving two years sea duty in invasions of Northwest Africa, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio and Southern France. He left with the rank of lieutenant commander. After his discharge in 1946, he came to Rockdale as partner and manager of a hardware store until 1962. He married Alma E. “Bootsie” Camp on May 16, 1948, in Austin. He was a resident of Rockdale for 62 years. He worked as postmaster in Rockdale, 1963-1982, when he retired. He continued to ranch until 1996. He was a member of the Rockdale School Board; the Rockdale Rotary Club since 1955, serving twice as president; layreader of St. Thomas Episcopal Church; and a member of the Rockdale VFW. He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years on Oct. 31, 1996; and a son, Sam Parker Peebles III on Dec. 29, 1983.

Survivors include a daughter, Pattie Ivey of Austin; a brother, Wyley Peebles of Lexington; and two sisters, Rosa Lewis of LaGrange and Ascenia Underwood of Lexington.
