AREA FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Central Texas Christian roughs up Holy Trinity Catholic; surging Cameron Yoe beats Taylor; Rockdale mashes Madisonville

Jeremiah Bergert scored four touchdowns to lead Central Texas Christian past Holy Trinity Catholic in a non-district six-man game Friday night at Frazee Field.

The game was halted at halftime because of the 45-point mercy rule.

Bergert scored on runs of 16, 14 and 15 yards, and he had an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Zach Bassett added points from the defensive side for the Lions (3-3), returning an interception 20 yards for a touchdown and tackling a Celtic runner in the end zone for a safety.

Quarterback Andrew Couvillon and Jacob Daheim provided the only highlight for the Celtics (1-5), teaming up for an 11-yard scoring pass in the first quarter.

Cameron Yoe 27, Taylor 14

TAYLOR - Cameron Yoe scored 14 fourth-quarter points and its defense tossed a second-half shutout to claim a 27-14 victory over Taylor in a District 24-3A game at Memorial Stadium.

Quarterback Steven Townsend scored two rushing touchdowns and tossed a third for the Yoemen (4-1, 2-0 in 24-3A).

The Ducks (2-3, 0-1) had a 14-13 lead at the half, and the third quarter passed quietly. But James Wells scored on a 1-yard run, and Quinn Haynes’ conversion run gave the Yoemen their first lead at 21-14 with 8:57 remaining in the game. Townsend iced it with an 8-yard touchdown dash with barely more than a minute left.

Townsend was 8-for-14 passing for 152 yards to remain among the area’s passing leaders and raise his season total to 929 yards. Brandon Free-man’s three catches for 40 yards also kept him among the area leaders with 22 receptions for 394 yards.

Rockdale 54, Madisonville 2

ROCKDALE - Cois Walker scored three rushing touchdowns to lead the Rockdale Tigers to an impressive 54-2 win over the Madisonville Mustangs in a District 24-3A game at Tiger Stadium.

The Tigers (5-1, 1-1) established a solid ground attack behind Walker and sophomore back Terral Dixon.

They also continued to impress through the air. Mark Drake found Joe Sanders three times for 72 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown pass that put Rockdale up 28-0 at halftime.

Madisonville (1-4, 0-2) was expected to be one of the top teams in the district with running back Chris Whaley, who has verbally committed to play at Texas. However, Whaley had his lowest output of the season, rushing for only 60 yards on 19 carries.

Rogers 27, Florence 0

ROGERS - The Rogers Eagles (4-1, 1-0 District 25-2A) chalked up a 27-0 victory over the Florence Buffaloes (1-5, 0-2) at Merk Field.

Hico 36, Moody 12

MOODY - The Hico Tigers fought off a second-half challenge by Moody to take a 36-12 District 16-2A triumph over Moody at Bearcat Stadium.

With Hico leading 14-0 in the third quarter, Jordan Jones picked off a Tigers pass and returned it 35 yards to close it to 14-6, and Walter Hammond broke free on a 42-yard scoring run to trim the lead to 14-12.

But Hico proved too strong, as Jamale Sanders, Cade Sklar and Dylan Turner each scored to give the Tigers (3-2, 1-1) the 36-12 victory.

Hammond led the Bearcats (1-4, 0-2) with 78 yards on 14 carries, raising his season totals to 530 yards on 101 totes to remain among the top 15 area rushers.

McGregor 42, Bruceville-Eddy 0

MCGREGOR - The McGregor Bulldogs (4-1, 2-0 District 16-2A) rolled to a 42-0 victory over the Bruceville-Eddy Eagles (1-4, 0-2) at Bulldog Stadium.

Dripping Springs 24, Killeen 17

KILLEEN - Jacob Moore’s 23-yard touchdown run with 3:19 remaining lifted Dripping Springs to a 24-17 victory over Killeen at Leo Buckley Stadium.

The Kangaroos (3-3, 0-2 District 25-4A) had tied it midway through the third quarter on Michael Cummings’ 38-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Salak.

The Tigers (6-0, 2-0), who got 103 yards passing and 125 rushing yards from quarterback Moore, staked a 10-0 first-quarter lead before Killeen rallied.

Reynaldo Marshall booted a 21-yard field goal, and Cummings hooked up with Salak for a 7-yard score to cut the gap to 17-10 by halftime.

Cummings threw for 158 yards and accounted for 42 of of the Kangaroos’ 84 rushing yards.

No. 6 Bremond 48, Granger 24

GRANGER - Perennial power Bremond showed why it’s the No. 6 team in Class A, taking a 48-24 non-district victory over Granger at Lions Stadium.

Versatile quarterback LiDarral Bailey threw three touchdown passes and ran for two scores to lead the Tigers, who raised their season mark to 5-0. Granger fell to 2-3.

Lions quarterback Kenny Sifuentes put on an impressive display of his own, tossing two touchdown passes - 19 yards to Robbie Filla and 3 yards to Matthew Castillo - and scoring on a 34-yard keeper. Castillo rushed for 124 yards on 16 carries.

No. 4 Richland Springs 64, Buckholts 18

BUCKHOLTS - The fourth-ranked Richland Springs Coyotes ran their winning streak to 46 games with a 64-18 victory over Buckholts in six-man action at Jim Hauk Field.

The Badgers (3-3) scored on three touchdown passes by William Watson, who tossed one each to Joell Mendoza, Mark Hernandez and Zach Gommert.

The Coyotes (5-0), two-time defending state champions, scored 40 first-quarter points and ended the game in the third period on the 45-point mercy rule.
