The forms represent a flurry of activity heading up to the Oct. 6 deadline to register for the presidential election on Nov. 4.
The county now has 156,678 registered voters. That number may climb by another 4,000 by Tuesday as mail-in registration forms come in. Clerks from the county tax assessor’s office are still inputting voter registration forms into databases that will become the voter registry.
“We’re working late every night trying to get people posted and on the system. The numbers are up some,” said Sharon Long, county tax assessor. “Typically, a presidential year generates more interest and activity, but I think there is more activity this year.”
Bell County had 154,123 people registered to vote in the last presidential election in 2004.
Nancy Boston, Bell County Republican Party chairwoman, said her party registered voters from a booth at the county fair in September.
The local arm of the Democratic Party registered 1,012 people at the Killeen Mall during the two weeks leading up to the deadline, said chairman Arthur Resa.
“We registered a lot of military people and folks who hadn’t registered before,” Resa said.
Ms. Long said her staff would be working late this entire week to complete their goal of updating the voter registry by Tuesday.
