Fleeing couple caught in Mexico indicted

BELTON - A Bell County grand jury indicted a couple Wednesday who were apprehended in Mexico this August after 50 days on the lam.

William Thomas Jacobsen, 31, and Marilyn McQueen Wesson, 57, left Bell County in June as sheriff’s deputies were wrapping up an investigation that eventually led to an arrest warrant being issued for Jacobsen. The warrant claimed he sexually assaulted a 13-year-old youth baseball player from Little-River Academy, where Jacobsen had been a coach for one of the teams.

Jacobsen is charged with first-degree felony continuous sexual abuse of a young child or children, a law that has only been on the books since September 2007.

The law is a get-tough measure on sexual predators that increases the minimum sentence upon conviction from five to 25 years. The maximum sentence of up to life in prison is the same.

Jacobsen’s common-law wife, Ms. Wesson, was indicted on a charge of hindering apprehension, a third-degree felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Ms. Wesson’s arrest affidavit indicates that she spoke on the phone with a relative in Bell County on July 1. The relative told police that Ms. Wesson said she was in Mexico and that police would not be able to track her cell phone or credit card transactions.

Ms. Wesson had told a deputy on June 18 that Jacobsen would show up at his office on Monday, June 23.

On June 21, the couple borrowed money and left town in a 1996 Ford Explorer with new car tags, according to the affidavit.

Investigators said Ms. Wesson left a note behind that proclaimed Jacobsen’s innocence and indicated it was her idea for the couple to “disappear” together.
