Former Killeen Kangaroo standout Iglesias starts at wide receiver for Oklahoma. His workout partner, Killeen Shoemaker graduate Roy Miller, is having a strong start to the season on the Texas defensive line.
While they are friends off the field, Iglesias’ father, Bobby, said he didn’t expect his son to be hanging around with Miller during the game between the top-ranked Sooners and No. 5 Texas.
Juaquin is “not going to be running up the middle,” Bobby said, explaining that Miller has a better chance of catching him outside the ballpark.
Miller is listed at 6 feet, 2 inches tall and 300 pounds, while Iglesias is 6 feet tall and 204 pounds, with 4.45-second speed in the 40-yard dash.
Killeen coach Sam Jones, who coached Iglesias and watched Miller’s career at Shoemaker, said both players are doing well. Of Miller, Jones said, “it looks like he’s having one of his better years this year.”
The coach said Miller reminded him a lot of former Killeen and OU standout Tommie Harris - a Pro Bowl defensive tackle with the Chicago Bears.
Area loyalties will be split some because of the pair.
“No doubt about it, I’m pulling for Oklahoma because he (Juaquin) played for me,”
Jones said, “and I’m pretty sure coach Ken Gray with Shoemaker will be pulling for Texas” because of Miller.
“He’s a great kid,” Bobby Iglesias said of Miller. “He’s a big guy and he’s going somewhere.”
He just hopes on Saturday it’s not anywhere near his son . . . at least until after the game.
