Wilsonart gives big boost to UW

United Way of Central Texas’ fall campaign is under way with a donation by Wilsonart that matched and surpassed the company’s contribution last year by $72,000.

“This is huge for us,” said Ann Thompson, executive director for United Way. “We are just ecstatic about these results.”

The United Way was concerned about raising funds with the current turmoil of the economy but local businesses are taking the challenge.

Wilsonart showed that “when the going gets tough, the tough get going,” Thompson said.

Wilsonart had a decrease of 60 employees this year, but still raised more than $300,000 that was matched by parent company ITW, for a total of more than $600,000.

“I am overwhelmed and touched by the graciousness and big hearts of our employees,” Wilsonart CEO Bill DiGaetano said.

A goal of $1,625,000 is set for the 2008 campaign, a $225,000 increase from 2007.

“In order to meet this goal we have gathered a very strong and talented group of individuals,” Ken Higdon, campaign cabinet chair, said. “They all deeply care about the Central Texas community and are committed to making an impact.”

In order to reach this goal, the United Way hopes companies running campaigns will encourage employees to participate.

Any business not currently involved or individuals wishing to get involved with the United Way may contact 254-778-8616.

“Although this is an unbelievable start, plenty of work still needs to be done,” Higdon said.
