Destiny Montelongo left her schoolbooks, shoes and pullover sweater on the bank and swam about 50 yards across a channel of Lake Belton near the Morgan’s Point Marina, said Randy Dixon, Morgan’s Point police chief.
“She swam across in her T-shirt and blue jeans,” Dixon said.
Police are still investigating where she went once she reached the other shore. At one point Destiny admitted she watched divers Tuesday night as they searched for her body, Dixon said.
Destiny appears to have left on her own volition as Dixon said there is no evidence she was forced to do something against her will.
He said there is a “very strong possibility” that charges would eventually be filed against the person who allowed her to stay the night.
“The individual she stayed with brought her to her grandmother’s house in Temple,” Dixon said. “We haven’t made positive identification with him.”
An Amber Alert was not issued in the case because there was no evidence the girl’s disappearance was the result of a criminal event.
Dixon said his department contacted the Department of Public Safety about issuing an alert, but was told the incident did not fit the state’s criteria for doing so.
