University of Mary Hardin-Baylor student Victoria Meadows shows off glowing test tubes for “Demos in the Dark: Things That Go Boom in the Night” at the Lucile Capt Amphitheater on the UMHB campus on Thursday. Demos featured a series of controlled fires and explosions, exciting demonstrations such as the electric pickle, the UMHB fire jug, purple flames, strange voices, dry ice tower of colors and banging balloons. Young attendees received helium filled balloons, slime and liquid nitrogen tasty treats. Admission was food to be donated to a local food bank. The university’s Sigma-Pi Chemistry Club, the Heart O’Texas Section of the American Chemical Society, and the Chemistry Department of UMHB sponsored the event to celebrate National Chemistry Week, Oct. 19-25.
