Many cast ballots in Milam

CAMERON - Early voting totals in the past five days indicate that the Nov. 4 general election may be a record-setting event.

The Milam County Clerk’s Office reported at the close of business Friday that 2,233 ballots have been cast, with five more days remaining for voters to participate in early voting. The county’s 14,672 registered voters have not been turning out in great numbers in recent elections.

Sherry Mueck, the county’s election’s clerk reported that in the 2008 primaries early voting drew 2,142 Democrats, and 227 Republicans. In 2004, the primaries brought in 792 Democrats and 49 Republicans. In the 2004 presidential election, only 3,744 people voted early.

Though the ballot lists no countywide local races, Precinct 1 voters will be choosing between Democratic candidate George Tomek and Republican hopeful Gary Kelarek for commissioner to replace retiring office holder Clifford Whiteley.

The county clerk’s office reported 864 early voters; the Rockdale box, 811; the Thorndale box, 211; and the Buckholts box, 83. The county clerk’s office mailed out 234 ballots, in addition to 29 military ballots.

Early voting continues Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the county clerk’s office, but ends at noon Friday in Buckholts, Thorndale and Rockdale.
