AREA FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Ash, Stroud, Murphy star as Holland upsets Granger; Larkin, Rogers edge Lago Vista to stay perfect in 25-2A; Rockdale gets key win at Caldwell; Troy pounds Clifton; Rosebud-Lott beats Marlin; Bartlett blanks Milano

HOLLAND - The Holland Hornets not only picked up their first District 26-A victory, but handed Granger its first league loss in the process on Friday night.

Clayton Ash threw a pair of touchdown passes to Ethan Stroud and ran for another while Doug Murphy amassed 124 yards with a touchdown to lead the Hornets to a 33-28 victory over Granger.

Holland improves to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in district while the Lions dip to 4-4, 2-1.

Ash hit Stroud on a 63-yard strike to start the Hornets’ scoring early in the game. Stroud would later score on a 34-yard fumble recovery.

Stroud hauled in a 38-yarder in the waning seconds of the first half. Murphy scored on a 23-yard run to give the Hornets a 27-22 lead at halftime.

Ash scored the Hornets’ lone touchdown of the second half on a 5-yard run at the 5:01 mark of the third quarter. Granger’s Kenny Sifuentes hit Chaston Kubacak with a 7-yarder early in the fourth.

Granger scored in the first half on runs by Jaron Davis, Robbie Filla an Andrew Aleman. Davis led the Lions with 90 yards on 12 carries.

Rogers 28, Lago Vista 21

LAGO VISTA - E.J. Larkin scored on a 70-yard run in the fourth quarter, breaking a 21-21 tie and lifting the Rogers Eagles to a 28-21 District 25-2A victory over Lago Vista at Sisemore Field.

The win was Rogers’ sixth straight and kept the Eagles (7-1, 4-0) in a virtual tie with Salado atop the district standings.

Lago Vista (5-3, 1-3) got on the board first with a 51-yard touchdown run by Scott Kerr, but Rogers came right back with a 47-yard scoring run from Chance Marek to tie it at 7. The Eagles tallied again when Larkin ran in from 40 yards out, and extended it to 21-7 in the second quarter on Robert Campos’ 8-yard run.

The Vikings wouldn’t go quietly. Dusty Upchurch caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Kerr, and Kain Tomlin scored on a 3-yard run to knot it at 21, setting the stage for Larkin’s game-winning scamper.

Rockdale 28, Caldwell 14

CALDWELL - The Rockdale Tigers remain in the playoff hunt with a 28-14 District 24-3A contest over Caldwell at Hornet Field.

The Tigers got a stellar defensive effort in the second half to shut down a powerful Hornet (4-3, 2-2) attack that had been averaging 47 points per game.

With the scored tied at 14 in the third quarter, Rockdale took the lead on a 1-yard run by quarterback Mark Drake, and Greg Chelf added an 11-yard scoring run in the fourth.

The win keeps the Tigers (7-2, 3-2) close on the heels of district leaders Cameron Yoe and Navasota.

Cameron Yoe 40, Bryan Rudder 0

BRYAN - James Wells and Steven Townsend both had big nights for the Yoemen as Cameron Yoe beat the first-year Bryan Rudder Rangers 40-0 at Merrill Green Stadium.

Wells scored three touchdowns on 142 yards rushing and 102 yards receiving and Yoe quarterback Townsend also had a hand in three touchdowns with 166 yards passing and 171 yards rushing to help Yoe improved to 6-1, 4-0.

Rosebud-Lott 34, Marlin 14

MARLIN - The Rosebud-Lott Cougars scored three fourth-quarter touchdowns to put away the Marlin Bulldogs 34-14 in District 20-2A action at Legion Stadium.

With the score tied at 14, Deandre Thompson scored on a 39-yard run, then Ben Guthrie caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Ernesto Flores to make it 28-14. Flores then rounded it out with a 3-yard run for the 34-14 final score.

Rosebud-Lott now stands 6-2 overall and 1-2 in district. Marlin fell to 2-6, 1-2.

Troy 41, Clifton 0

CLIFTON - Jeremy Conrad scored three touchdowns to lead the Trojans to a 41-0 victory over Clifton (2-5, 1-3) at Cub Stadium.

Chris Chandler hit Dylan Sebek for a 40-yard touchdown pass to give Troy (5-2, 4-0) a 21-0 lead. Derrick Vasta sealed the victory with late touchdowns that totaled 111 yards.

Troy intercepted five passes.

McGregor 49, Moody 12

MOODY - The McGregor Bulldogs kept within striking distance of the District 16-2A lead with a dominating 49-12 victory over Moody at Bearcat Stadium.

The Bulldogs (6-2, 4-1) got a 4-yard run from DeShun Pierson to take a 7-0 first-quarter lead and quarterback Larry Smith’s long scoring run, followed by his 32-yard touchdown pass to Peyton Fisk, helped the Bulldogs build a 42-6 lead at the half.

Moody (1-7, 0-5) has been eliminated from postseason contention.

Bartlett 34, Milano 0

MILANO - The Bartlett Bulldogs are alone in first place in District 26-A after a 34-0 win over Milano on Friday night at Pruitt Field.

The Bulldogs (5-3, 3-0) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter after quarterback Pierre Smith tossed a 18-yard touchdown pass to receiver Gabriel Gadison.

Smith and Gadison connected again at the first-half buzzer to give Bartlett a 14-0 lead.

Milano dropped to 4-4, 0-3.

College Station A&M Consolidated 28, Harker Heights 14

COLLEGE STATION - Jarvon Searcy scored on touchdown runs of 2, 14, and 1 yard to lead the College Station A&M Consolidated Tigers to a 28-14 win over the Harker Heights Knights at Tigerland Stadium.

The Knights (1-7, 1-4) were eliminated from postseason contention, while the Tigers (4-4, 3-2), who earlier this week forfeited their win over Belton, put themselves in position to secure a playoff spot next week.

Holy Trinity Catholic 72, Austin NYOS 41

The Holy Trinity Catholic Celtics outscored Austin Not Your Ordinary School in every quarter to take a 72-41 non-district six-man contest at Gandy Field.

The loss extends the Jaguars’ losing streak to seven games. It marks the second game this season that the Celtics have yielded fewer than 48 points.

Andrew Couvillon scored five touchdowns for the Celtics, who raised their season mark to 2-7.

No. 7 Copperas Cove 31, Killeen Shoemaker 14

COPPERAS COVE - The No. 7 Copperas Cove Bulldawgs took a 24-7 halftime lead and never looked back, claiming a 31-14 District 12-5A victory at Bulldawg Stadium.

Brelan Chancellor gave the Bulldawgs (8-0, 5-0) the early lead with a 15-yard touchdown run, but the Grey Wolves (3-5, 2-3) tied it on a 3-yard run by Dion Demers.

But Josh Boyce took the ensuing kickoff back 79 yards for a touchdown and a 14-7 Bulldawg lead.

Marble Falls 42, Lampasas 15

MARBLE FALLS - The Lampasas Badgers’ woes continued Friday as they fell 42-15 to Marble Falls at Mustang Stadium in District 25-4A action.

The Badgers dropped to 0-8, 0-4 in district and have been eliminated from playoff contention.
