THS auditorium getting a face-lift

Remodeling of the Temple High School auditorium has begun and should be completed before the 2009-10 school year, a district official said.

Last week, the city of Temple issued the TISD a building permit with a value of $4,285,000 for renovations of the current THS auditorium.

“We have already begun the demolition process,” Max Cleaver said, TISD executive director of planning and operations. “We have removed the seating and done some asbestos abatement, and removed some of the props and stage materials, and set up a perimeter fence around the site.”

Construction trailers have been set up, and temporary power lines established, he said. The district’s construction manager is Baird-Williams Construction, and more than 20 subcontractors will be brought in to help.

The new auditorium will feature a reconstructed stage, new lighting and materials Cleaver said are being installed to promote safety.

The renovated auditorium will feature a state-of-the-art acoustic sound system.

“The new sound system will blow people’s socks off,” said Cleaver, who said that BAi, a sound engineering company in Austin, was brought in to help with acoustics.

The sound system being installed is a Meyer Constellation electroacoustic architecture system.

“The new system will feature 146 speakers, and 22 microphones,” Cleaver said. “I would say that it’s almost like an at-home surround sound system on steroids - it’s going to be awesome.”

The renovations are being made using money from the $19.9 million bond passed by Temple voters in 2007.

The TISD will hold a public auction to dispose of surplus property. The sale will be on Saturdaybeginning at 10 a.m. on the TISD grounds located near 200 N. 23rd St. A partial list of items being sold is available at www.billhallauctioneer.com/auction_list.php.

Among the items for sale will be the older chairs from the Temple High School auditorium, buses, automotive and shop equipment, and lawn and grounds equipment.
