Temple bowlers spared by new alley

Temple bowlers who have struck out on the sport after Action World Bowl Center burned last December can start polishing their shoes.

David and Anna Kessler announced on Wednesday a $5 million renovation plan, which includes 32 bowling lanes and a family fun center, at the former Albertson’s grocery store on Interstate 35 and Adams Avenue in Temple.

The Albertson’s building has remained empty since the store closed in December 2002. Despite not knowing what could happen at that intersection when Interstate 35 is widened, Mr. Kessler said he saw opportunity in the vacant structure.

“We can take a building that is somewhat of an eyesore, and make it attractive,” Kessler said. “This exciting family complex will provide an environment that includes not only family oriented activities, but also options for patrons of all ages, including the county’s many bowling leagues, who are currently without a permanent home.”

The Kessler’s plan must be approved by the city council before work can begin. Pending that approval, renovation could begin January 2009, and Temple bowlers could hit the lanes in the summer of 2009.

Kessler said the family entertainment center would employ about 30 permanent and 15 part-time workers.

Planned features and activities:

n 32 state-of-the art bowling lanes

n 12 VIP lanes featuring a suite-like appearance

n arcade

n rock climbing

n full-service restaurant

n children’s center

n private party room

This is the Kesslers’ first business venture. Ms. Kessler is the daughter of Jim Tranum, and co-owner of Tranum Auto Group. Mr. Kessler has worked in the high-tech industry in Temple since 1966.

The former owner of Action World Bowl Center, Cyndy Dykes, said earlier this month she would not rebuild.
