Mr. Hughes died Sunday, Nov. 2, in a Temple hospital.
He was born May 27, 1939, in Pincap, Va., to Jennings and Emily Hughes. He served in the U.S. Army for 20 years, retiring at Fort Hood in 1978. His military awards include: Army Commendation Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal with five bronze loops; National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with one silver star; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with palm; Driver and Mechanic Badge. He was a graduated from Central Texas College with a degree in refrigeration and auto mechanics. He was a member of the VFW, DAV and AARP.
Survivors are a son, Thomas Hughes of San Antonio; two daughters Kathy Hughes of Harker Heights and Carol Smith of Oviedo, Fla.; three sisters, Marie McDowell of Georgia, Nancy Robertson and Peggy Lewis, both of Virginia; and three grandchildren.
Visitation is 1-2 p.m. Friday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen.
