Belton man charged with indecency in Medina County

A 54-year-old Belton man who served as a youth sports coach and church camp volunteer was charged with child molestation in Medina County.

Steven Hampton Kennedy was indicted Oct. 2 on a charge of indecency with a child, a second-degree felony.

Kennedy is out on bail and has a pretrial hearing scheduled for Dec. 22.

He does not have a criminal record in Bell County.

The indictment charges that Kennedy groped a 13-year-old girl sometime around Sept. 10, 2000.

“The case includes information about a local (Medina County) victim but also includes information from individuals from Bell County who make similar claims,” Medina County District Attorney Tony Hackebeil said. “There appears to be a pattern of conduct.”

The incident was reported directly to Hackebeil’s office.

“I’ve actually received a couple of calls about him since the indictment,” Hackebeil said.

He said those calls came from Bell County.

It does not appear Kennedy is being investigated for any accusations made out of Bell County.

Law officials from Bell County Sheriff’s office and Belton Police Department said there had been no complaints made locally.

Jimmy Lewing, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said officials would be interested in speaking with Hackebeil to see if he has evidence of crimes Kennedy may have committed locally.

In the past, Kennedy has been a parent volunteer at church camps sponsored by the Belton Church of Christ and a coach for youth soccer and basketball teams from the Belton Christian Youth Center.

Telephone messages left Thursday with leaders of both organizations were not returned.

A phone message left on Kennedy’s home phone was not returned.
