Brian Browder scored three touchdowns, Jeremiah Bergert and Caleb Paschall had two apiece and CTCS allowed only 108 total yards as the Lions blasted Amarillo Holy Cross 50-0 on Saturday in a TAPPS Six-Man Division I bi-district game at Greyhound Stadium.
The game ended at halftime on the 45-point mercy rule.
CTCS (6-5), which rushed for 179 yards and didn’t complete a pass, advanced to the state quarterfinals to battle third-ranked Dickinson Pine Drive (9-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Oakwood.
Coach Jeremy Wentrcek’s Lions had lost in the first round of the playoffs the last two years and hadn’t won a postseason game since 2004, when they reached the TAPPS Six-Man Class 2A semifinals.
CTCS didn’t waste any time in taking control against the Mustangs (2-9). Browder returned a punt 55 yards for a touchdown two minutes into the game, and after Bergert’s 1-yard TD run Paschall recovered a fumble and raced 65 yards for another score and a 22-0 lead.
Browder then rushed for TDs of 37 and 2 yards in the second quarter, followed by scoring runs of 5 yards by Bergert and 15 by Paschall to push the margin past 45.
The Lions’ defensive leaders were Bergert, Zach Bassett, Taylor Truitt and Browder. CTCS recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass.
