Temple's Pickett highlights District 12-5A team; Belton players honored

Temple’s Jordan Pickett isn’t sharing any district honors this season.

After being named the league’s Co-Offensive Player of the Year in 2007, Pickett earned District 12-5A’s Offensive Player of the Year award to highlight the area contingent on the all-district team, which was announced on Monday.

The 6-2 senior led the Tem-Cats - who finished 20-23 and fifth in the league - with 420 kills (3.53 per game), 398 asssists (3.34/game), 99 blocks (0.83/game) and was fourth with 273 digs (2.29/game).

Temple’s Patti Kabobel earned first-team honors. Kabobel was second in kills with 277 (2.3/game), second in aces and fifth in digs.

Belton senior Becca Owen was named to the first team for the second straight season. The 5-11 outside hitter had a team-best 339 kills (2.92/game) and 290 digs (2.5/game) and was second in aces and third in blocks.

She led the Lady Tigers to a 21-14 record, tied for second in district with Bryan and Copperas Cove, and the Class 5A area playoffs before losing to Garland Sachse. Belton’s win over Mesquite in the bi-district round was the Lady Tigers’ first playoff victory since 2004.

Belton senior Myca San Miguel and sophomore Grace Weaver and Temple’s Lauren Mann were second-team selections. San Miguel - an honorable mention selection last year - led the team with 830 assists (7.2/game), was second in blocks, third in aces and fourth in digs. Weaver led the team with 60 aces and was second in kills with 319 (2.8/game) and digs. Mann led the Tem-Cats with 533 digs (4.4/game).

Temple’s Kacie Easley, Shantae Hewins and Kaitlin Muniz and Belton’s Tilatha Akins were named honorable mention. Easley was third on the team in digs, Hewins was third in kills and Muniz was was second in digs. Akins - an honorable mention selection last year - led the Lady Tigers with 91 blocks and was third in digs and kills.

Copperas Cove’s Christina Miller and Sapphire Reid were first-team selections and Kara Kemp, Killeen Shoemaker’s Taneshia Harmon and Anterika Moore of Harker Heights were on the second team.

Bryan’s Kaylee Piatt was voted Most Valuable Player and Lady Vikings coach Caroline Simpson won Coach of the Year.

College Station A&M Consolidated, which went unbeaten in league play, received the other top awards. Hillary Parker was Setter of the Year, Kelsey Kinley was the Defensive Player of the Year and Arika Arthur was the Newcomer of the Year.
