She’s a grand Marshall

Watch out on Monday for the Adams Street name change.

It’s only a temporary change but for one day Adams will be known as Mary Alice Marshall Avenue.

That’s not the only honor Temple College’s favorite cheerleader will receive. Mrs. Marshall will be on hand to help light up the city’s Christmas tree at 6:15 p.m. in front of the Temple Municipal Building and she will lead the parade at 6:30 p.m. as the grand marshal. The theme of this year’s parade is “Bells & Bows.”

Mayor Bill Jones III will read a proclamation declaring December as Mary Alice Marshall month for the city of Temple.

On Saturday, the Temple Symphony Orchestra will present its annual holiday concert, also a tribute to Mrs. Marshall, called “A Song for the Season.”

“It’s such a wonderful thing. I think that’s what keeps me all happy at this time,” Mrs. Marshall said. “I’m just excited. I’m going to ride in the parade and the symphony is going to honor me. I can’t believe that I’m experiencing what I’m experiencing.”

The concert will be performed in celebration of Mrs. Marshall’s life and contribution to the arts at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary Alice Marshall Performing Arts Center at Temple College, 2600 S. First St.

“Mary Alice has been a cheerleader for music at Temple College since I arrived,” said Tom Fairlie, TSO director and director of the Fine Arts Department at TC. “Her support has provided a real sense of community to what we do here at TC. I am thankful for her presence, and know that without her the Temple College music program would not be the vibrant living thing that it is today.”

Tickets for the concert are $20 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets are available at the TSO office, Von Music, Cultural Activities Center or the TC Fine Arts Department.

“There is nothing more motivating than working with a person who has been with an arts organization since its inception,” said Rick Thomssen, TSO’s executive director.
