Closing arguments given in capital murder trial

GATESVILLE - In closing arguments today in the capital murder trial of Megan Lewis-Grant defense attorney Russ Hunt Sr. told the jury the state did not prove its case.

Ms. Lewis-Grant faces a life sentence in prison if convicted of participating in the murder of her ex-husband Michael Grant, who died in September 2007 when he was stabbed to death as he slept.

The former boyfriend of Lewis-Grant, John Hopkins, has been sentenced to a life term for the stabbing and Jamie Grant, Lewis-Grant's 16-year-old son to 45-years for his role in the crime.

Hunt told jurors the state's case rests on the testimony of Hopkins, a two-time felon, who is a liar, thief and murderer. He said putting Ms. Grant in prison for the rest of her life based on his testimony alone would be unjust.

District Attorney David Castillo told jurors to consider all of the evidence presented in the trial together with Hopkins's testimony. He said the facts are like the elements of a storm that come together and point to Ms. Lewis-Grant as somebody who participated in her ex-husband's murder.

The jury began deliberating at 11:27 a.m.
