A witness said when the victim’s boat capsized 15 to 20 feet offshore at Cedar Gap Park in Harker Heights, the man tried to swim to shore but started going under the water.
The witness jumped in the water in an attempt to rescue the man, but was unsuccessful, police said.
Killeen police spokeswoman Carroll Smith said the identity of the boater was not known late Sunday.
Stillhouse Hollow was hosting a fishing tournament all day Sunday, but it is not known if the victim was a participant.
Several area agencies responded to the call, including the Department of Public Safety, a Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden, Harker Heights police and emergency workers, Bell County Sheriff’s Office, Killeen police, and Morgan’s Point Resort and Harker Heights dive teams.
The search continued after dark at the park where a K-9 officer had put up an American flag. Asked why it was there, a man at the park said, “I think that will become clear to you soon.”
