Mr. Hemingway died Thursday, Dec. 11, in Harker Heights.
He was born Oct. 26, 1920, to John T. Hemingway and Ruth Wilson Hemingway in Greeley, Colo. He graduated from Amarillo High School, and received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia.
His military career began during World War II, continued into the Korean War when he commanded the 2nd and 3rd battalions of the 223rd Infantry Regiment, and stretched into two tours of Vietnam, where he commanded all non-divisional Army aviation operations. Later he served as Director of Army Aviation at the Pentagon and as Assistant Division Commander of the 1st Cavalry Division.
After retiring from the U.S. Army, he served for 27 years as the municipal courts judge in Killeen.He served as past chairman and president of the Greater Killeen Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the GKCC Governmental Affairs Division for 13 years, chairman of the GKCC Area Development Committee, was a member of the Adventist Hospital board of trustees and the Copperas Cove Hospital Authority, and was a founding member and the first president of the Central Texas University Task Force that helped establish Tarleton State University-Central Texas in Killeen.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Shirley Hemingway of Harker Heights; a son, Jack Hemingway Jr. of Killeen; a daughter, Ruth Ann Fenell; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
