Some bridges, overpasses closed due to icy weather

Temple police officer uses caution lights to alert drivers to slow down over the Fifth Street bridge, Tuesday morning.
The City of Temple is experiencing freezing rain conditions at this hour. This has caused many bridges and overpasses to ice over.

Specifically, the elevated portion of Interstate 35, both north and southbound, has been closed at this time due to ice. Other overpasses and bridges are being evaluated by officers and closed when they become impassable.

Sanding crews are out and several wrecks are being reported.

The weather caused Bell County to remove all its dump trucks from the roadways as a precaution against accidents.

"We’ve got the drivers doing other stuff at the yard," said Richard Macchi, county engineer.

As reports started to file in about roadways becoming treacherous, Macchi said he dispatched crews to the bridges in the county that in the past have been most susceptible to freezing.

On I-35 and U.S. 190 in Belton at least seven accidents happened within an hour. At 10:50 a.m. Police Chief Jen Wesley issued an advisory encouraging the public to avoid driving the roadways if possible.

Temple police announced the following road closings:

- Interstate 35 Northbound at the South Loop overpass - closed due to numerous minor accidents.Traffic is being route on to service roads and is moving very slowly.

- NE Loop 363 at Lower Troy Road - closed due to ice and an injury accident (injuries are non-life-threatening.

- Central Avenue overpass over Interstate 35 - open for now (was shut down and is now re-opened after being sanded by City of Temple Street Department).

- South 3rd Street at Ave. B overpass - open for now (was shut down, but is now re-opened after being sanded.
