Only about 5 percent had a payment of $2,000 or greater.
The data come from the American Community Survey, a nationwide poll and a critical element in the Census Bureau’s reorganized 10-year count. The survey includes 3 million households. This year for the first time, the ACS includes statistics from multiple years.
Along with housing, the ACS looks at other factors such as age, race, income and veterans status.
For renters, more than 50 percent paid at least $750 per month for housing. Median rent paid was under $650, however. And for 35 percent of renters, their payment constituted nearly 40 percent of their household income.
Nearly one-half the homes in Temple were built in three decades - the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s - and only about 6 percent were built before Germany invaded Poland at the outset of World War II.
By far the majority of homes have at least three bedrooms, but just 1 percent have five or more. Fewer than 1 percent lack a bathroom and/or kitchen.
Editor’s note: This is the second in a six-part Sunday series on data from the American Community Survey.
