Burial will follow in Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
Mrs. Hammond died Saturday, Dec. 20, at a Killeen hospital.
She grew up in Waco and graduated high school there. She received a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Baylor University and studied art at Central Texas College in Killeen. She taught school for 35 years in Bruni, China Springs, Waco, Killeen, Copperas Cove and Anchorage, Alaska, and substituted near Paris, France. She taught high school art for 15 years. She was active in the Killeen and Copperas Cove Art Guilds.
She married James Hammonds on March 13, 1958. She was a member of the Fairview Baptist Church and of the Delta Gappa Gamma (Lambda Omicron). She was awarded the Book of Golden Deeds in 1996 by the Copperas Cove Exchange Club and was named 1985-86 Educator of the Year by the Exchange Club.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years of Copperas Cove; a son, Larry Hammonds of New Braunfels; a sister, Mary Sylvia Ross of Waco; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove.
