She came two weeks early and the family thought she was going to be a baby boy.
“They told me it was going to be a boy,” said Barbara Turner, Nevaeh’s paternal grandmother. “That’s OK. I want another girl grandchild. You get to dress girls up real cute.”
The mother, Shiela Vollmar, 19, said she wasn’t due until Jan. 15 but began having contractions Wednesday evening. Mrs. Vollmar and her husband arrived at Scott & White Memorial Hospital after 8 p.m.
About six hours later Nevaeh was born by Caesarean section.
Within minutes of the birth, grandma had been notified by text message about the news.
“She’s going to be representing a lot of new changes,” Ms. Turner said.
This is the third child born to Ms. Vollmar and Carleton Turner Sr., 20. They have a 3-year-old boy and 1-year-old girl.
Although the father was by his wife’s side during labor and delivery, he had gone to work at a local restaurant before the media was able to make contact with the family.
“For him to be so young and be a responsible father, I’m proud of him,” said Turner’s mother. “I’m blessed, I really am.”
The new baby’s name has special meaning for the young family. Nevaeh is heaven spelled backward and Louise was the name of the baby’s great-grandmother who died 22 years ago.
The grandmother stood outside the baby’s room and beamed as she talked about her granddaughter’s middle name.
“My mom was a real, real lovable person,” she said.
