The toddler had several serious injuries, including a fractured pelvis and neck, bleeding inside her head, and several injuries to her face, her mother said.
The fractures in the toddler’s pelvis and neck will heal on their own in about six weeks and the bleeding inside her head has not caused any swelling, her grandmother said Thursday. The child is being treated at Scott & White Memorial Hospital.
Bruises on her face have faded, revealing the beautiful little girl underneath.
Soon, the spunky toddler will be able to return home to cuddle up with her baby sister and play with her baby dolls, her grandmother said.
The accident occurred Sunday night on West Adams Avenue in Temple when the toddler wandered away from her family at a laundromat.
The parents searched the area around the laundromat, then heard a woman say someone had been hit by a vehicle.
“I kept saying, ‘No, it’s not her, no, it’s not her’ and then I knew it was her and I ran and I screamed,” the mother said.
Sgt. Brad Hunt, public information officer for the Temple Police Department, said an investigation into the accident indicates that speed, alcohol or impairment by the driver were not factors in the crash. The driver stopped immediately after the child was struck.
Since the accident, the parents of the toddler continue to receive hateful messages on the Internet, making their traumatic experience more difficult to bear, the mother said. Because of this, the family has asked for their names to be withheld.
Her parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles surround the toddler, and they would like to thank everyone who has been praying for the girl they call their “little angel.”
