College basketball: TC men dominate Arkansas Baptist, but standout Conley might miss rest of season with injury

FORT SMITH, Ark. - The Temple College men’s basketball team rebounded from a four-week layoff and the bad news that injured sophomore standout wing J.B. Conley might miss the rest of the season by beating Arkansas Baptist 106-60 on Friday.

Allyn Cooks had 25 points, seven assists and four steals and former Temple Wildcat Russ Permenter added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Leopards (10-4), who led 57-37 at halftime and forced 30 turnovers. Also for TC, Marlon Miller (Belton) scored 14 points, Jordan Brown (Killeen) had 13 and Chris Ellis (Harker Heights) added 11.

Temple coach Kirby Johnson said Conley, who hadn’t played or practiced since before Thanksgiving because of a stress fracture in his left foot, broke his left ankle when he landed on a teammate’s foot during practice Tuesday. He’ll miss at least eight weeks and maybe the rest of the season, Johnson said.

“Our guys were upset because they didn’t believe it,” Johnson said. “It’s disappointing. We’ll find out more Wednesday. We’ll wait and see (whether he returns this season).”

Temple will play Carl Albert (Okla.) at 1 p.m. today and finish the three-day event against host Arkansas-Fort Smith at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Lady Leopards down San Jacinto

WACO - The Temple College Lady Leopards ended a three-game skid, and more importantly came off a month-long break with a convincing 59-47 win over San Jacinto at the New Balance Shoot-out at McLennan Community College on Friday.

“Anytime you come out of the break with a win you have to be feeling pretty good,” Temple coach Kim Sebek said.

Mareta Bailey led the Lady Leopards with 22 points and 14 rebounds, while Jessica Sommers and Chloe Wallace added eight each.

“Mareta came out and did some great things for us today,” Sebek said. “She knocked down a 3-pointer in each half that really sparked us and she controlled the boards as well.”

The Lady Leopards (6-6) will conclude play in the Shoot-Out against Paris at 5 p.m. today then open conference on Wednesday when they host Weatherford at 5:30 p.m.
