Strong defense, Petro's goals propel Temple girls past Waco in home opener

Rebecca Petro scored two unassisted goals and Temple’s defense came close to posting a shutout as the Lady Wildcats beat Waco 2-1 in their home opener Tuesday night at Woodson Field.

The Lady Wildcats improved to 3-1-1 after going 2-1-1 last weekend in the season-opening Blue Bell Classic in Brenham.

Petro, a junior transfer from Salado, scored a goal in traffic midway through the first half for a 1-0 lead, then added another goal in the crowd to make it 2-0 a few minutes after halftime.

A defense led by Kaitlin Muniz allowed only a couple of shots on freshman goalkeeper Abby Blunt, and Waco’s lone goal came with about four minutes left, after Temple coach Oscar Bersoza had removed most of his starting players.

“We were really controlling the tempo tonight,” Bersoza said. “We played good defense."

The Lady Wildcats next will compete in the Tomball Lady Cougar Classic beginning at 1:30 p.m. Thursday against Alvin.
