Jam session: Reynolds' dunks help CTCS overpower Bracken in playoff opener

Central Texas Christian’s Brent Reynolds has thrown down his share of dunks this season.

But none, in his mind, compare to his two jams during the eighth-ranked Lions’ 62-46 win over Bulverde Bracken Christian on Friday night in a TAPPS Class 2A bi-district playoff game.

“Those were by far my best two this year,” Reynolds said with a grin.

Reynolds controlled the second half, scoring 16 of his game-high 24 points, including a pair of impressive dunks, as CTCS cruised into the second round of the playoffs for the second straight season.

The Lions (23-3) will face either El Paso Jesus Chapel or Abilene Christian in an area-round playoff game Tuesday night at CTCS.

Clay Crews scored 19 and fellow guard Nash Ingram had 15 for the Lions, who shot 47 percent from the floor and led by as many as 23 points.

CTCS held Bracken without a field goal for at least three minutes in three different quarters and the Warriors shot 31 percent from the floor. Guards Bryce Barry and Adam Johnson scored a team-high 16 points.

“Everything was just clicking,” Crews said. “We were all playing together, everybody knew where everybody was.”

CTCS, which led by nine at halftime, came out of the locker room and scored on four straight possessions - baskets by Reynolds, a layup by Crews and a 3-pointer by Ingram - to take control with a 9-0 run.

Reynolds, the Lions’ 6-3 senior center, scored eight in the third as CTCS led 45-26 heading into the fourth.

“That was the biggest thing, just getting the ball to Brent,” CTCS coach Nuni Venegas said. “He was on top of his game tonight.”

Reynolds’ second basket in that game-changing stretch started out as a layup along the baseline before he went under the basket and threw down a reverse dunk.

“I just happened to go up and it was there,” he said.

Reynolds’ second dunk came midway through the fourth quarter after Bracken made a late charge, cutting the lead to 12 with 5:22 remaining.

Reynolds absorbed contact and elevated for another slam. The basket and free throw started an 11-0 run that turned the game into a rout.

“He’s had a couple good ones this year, but none like that,” Crews said. “Not on a stage like that. Those were big momentum changers.”

Wary of Reynolds’ ability to back down defenders for easy layups and dunks, Bracken often rotated an extra defender in the paint. But that left Crews and Ingram open for layups and jumpers.

The Lions’ inside-outside tandem - especially Reynolds on this night - was just too much for Bracken to contain.

“A lot of teams just don’t have an answer for him,” Crews said. “It just opens everything up."
