The Lady Leopards scored three runs in the first inning of the opener and pitcher Kayla Shepherd did the rest, allowing just three hits and no earned runs to improve to 6-0. The sophomore stuck out eight, all in the final three innings.
“I guess she got mad or something,” Temple coach Larry Hennig. “But how would you like to be Iowa Western and be indoor all season because of the snow, then your first game you face Kayla just throwing some nasty stuff at you?”
Temple (10-3) led 2-1 heading into the sixth inning of the second game, and pitcher Caitlin Austin (4-2) had been dominating the Buccaneers. But an unearned run forced extra innings, where the Bucs found the momentum to win.
The Lady Leopards will face Seminole State (Oklahoma) - a 53-win team last season - at 11:30 a.m. today, then play Iowa Western again at 1:30 p.m. and Blinn at 5:30.
