Boys basketball playoff roundup: Troy moves past Malakoff; Academy eliminated by Poth in overtime

FAIRFIELD - The Troy Trojans weren’t satisfied with just being able to say they won their first district title in 25 years. On Friday they proved they were a worthy playoff team as well, topping Malakoff 52-42 in a Class 2A area round playoff game.

Zach Lynch scored 21 points and Stephen Ford added 15 for the Trojans (21-13), who were making their first playoff appearance in 10 years.

But it wasn’t easy for the Trojans who found themselves down 18-7 before going on a 13-2 run before halftime to tie the game at 20.

Then in the second half, the Trojans used a press to wear down Malakoff and pull out the ten-point win.

“We just played better defense,” Troy coach David Brawner said of the second half. We slowed it down on them and I think it got them frustrated.”

The Trojans will battle the winner between Edgewood and Maypearl, which was going on later Friday evening.

Poth eliminates No. 11 Academy in overtime, 55-48

BASTROP - The Academy Bumblebees led a tight contest most of the way before falling 55-48 in overtime to Poth in a Class 2A area-round playoff game Friday night.

The 11th-ranked Bees ended their season with a 27-6 record.

Senior Kyler Kelton finished with a team-high 16 points.
