High school softball: Espinosa, Guevara star as Temple wins first game; Belton splits pair at Brazosport

ENNIS - Elisa Espinosa pitched a five-hitter with nine strikeouts and Lauren Guevara stroked a go-ahead two-run double in the seventh inning as the Temple softball team beat Mesquite Poteet 3-1 on Friday at the Ennis tournament. Later in the day, host Ennis defeated the Tem-Cats 9-5.

Poteet (8-2) tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Guevara’s double drove in two runners and Espinosa (4-5) retired Poteet in order in the seventh.

“That was overall our best game from start to finish this season,” said Temple coach Steve Prentiss, whose team won two games on Thursday.

Temple came out strong against Ennis and led 4-1 through 3˝ innings, but the home team took advantage of six hits and some Tem-Cat defensive lapses to score six runs and take control. Jenna Bane had a triple and a double for Temple.

The Tem-Cats will complete their tournament stay today by playing Dumas at 11 a.m. and Red Oak at 3 p.m.
