BRYAN - Temple held a lead in the final minute of regulation before suffering a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime lose to Bryan on Wednesday night.
The Wildcats (13-9, 5-5 District 12-5A) were up 1-0 until the Vikings tied it off a free kick with 57 seconds left in the second half. With it still knotted at 1-all through the first extra period, Bryan scored the game-winner with only 22 seconds remaining in overtime.
“The guys were angry afterward because they knew what this game meant in the playoff chase, but I thought we played good,” said Temple coach Matt Corley, whose squad fell a game behind Bryan in the battle for the district’s final playoff berth. “This doesn’t knock us out of the playoffs, but it makes things difficult.”
Itai Meki scored off an assist by Tyler Gibson midway through the second half for the Wildcats, who will play at College Station A&M Consolidated on Friday.
Belton’s second-half flurry beats Ellison
KILLEEN - Brandon Maldonado, Nick Palamara and Vincent Crepeau scored goals in a 7½-minute blitzkrieg in the second half to propel the Belton boys soccer team to a 4-1 win over Killeen Ellison on Wednesday night.
Crepeau also had a first-half goal for the nationally ranked Tigers, who improved to 20-1 overall and 10-0 in District 12-5A. Tayron Martin assisted on two goals.
After Crepeau’s goal in the 30th minute, Ellison tied it in the 38th. But following a scoreless first 11 minutes in the second half, Belton jumped on the Eagles (6-10-3, 3-7) for the three goals and a 4-1 advantage.
“Basically we had been there before,” Belton coach Tarcisio Mosnia said. “At times we have been down a goal, so this was not any different. We just had to play the game.”
The Tigers will host last-place Killeen Shoemaker on Friday night.
Temple girls move past Bryan
A penalty kick by Lauren Muniz in the fifth minute of the second half was all the offense Temple needed in a 1-0 win over Bryan at Woodson Field on Wednesday.
“There wasn’t anyone who really stood out tonight,” Temple coach Oscar Bersoza said. “The whole team played outstanding.”
Temple (13-6-1, 7-3 District 12-5A) moved one game ahead of Bryan (10-10, 6-4) in the district standings. The Lady Wildcats, who stand alone in third place, have a chance to clinch a playoff spot when they host second-place College Station A&M Consolidated on Friday.
“The girls knew what was at stake tonight,” Bersoza said. “And we know Consolidated is going to be a tough game. But Bryan is a good team and we have some momentum going into Friday’s game. It’s going to be a huge game.”
Belton girls hammer Ellison
BELTON - Chelsea Jones scored four goals and Belton poured it on Killeen Ellison early and often in an 11-0 victory Wednesday night at Wilson-Kerzee Field.
