High school soccer: Temple teams swept by A&M Consolidated; first-place Belton squads blast Shoemaker

COLLEGE STATION - Temple’s struggles continued Friday night with a 3-1 loss to College Station A&M Consolidated, dropping the Wildcats two games back of fourth place in District 12-5A.

Temple (13-10, 5-6 in 12-5A), which has lost six of its last eight matches, is two games behind Bryan and Harker Heights in the battle for the league’s final playoff berth.

The Wildcats close out the district season with matches at home against Heights on Tuesday, at rival Belton next Friday and home against Killeen Ellison on March 17.

Caffey, Belton flatten Shoemaker

BELTON - Senior Josh Caffey scored three goals in the first 12 minutes and Belton cruised to a 5-0 victory over Killeen Shoemaker on Friday at Wilson-Kerzee Field.

After Caffey pushed his career goal total to 96, Tyler Pate capped the scoring with a pair of goals for the Tigers (21-1, 11-0 District 12-5A).

“The important thing is for us to stay focused on each game as it comes,” said Belton coach Tarcisio Mosnia, whose squad is ranked No. 8 nationally in the ESPN RISE Fab 50 poll. “And I don’t think the guys are looking ahead to anyone.”

Pate, Cade Carlson and Evan McLaughlin had assists for the Tigers, who have outscored opponents 95-17.

Belton will play at Copperas Cove on Tuesday before hosting rival Temple next Friday.

Consol blanks Temple girls

Temple coach Oscar Bersoza offered no excuses Friday night. He knew that College Station A&M Consolidated was just simply better as the Lady Tigers topped the Lady Wildcats 3-0 at Woodson Field.

“I can’t say that we played bad,” Bersoza said. “Consolidated played well. They moved the ball well and really took it to us.”

Consol was up 1-0 by halftime, and Bersoza admitted that was a concern for the Lady Wildcats, who rely heavily on defense.

“Really with about six minutes left in the half, we started to change things just to see if we could get something going,” he said.

Instead it opened the door for two more goals by the Lady Tigers in the second half.

Consol improved to 13-4-4 and 10-1 in District 12-5A, securing no worse than a second-place finish in district. Temple fell to 13-7-1, 7-4 but needs just a tie or a win in one of its final three games to secure a playoff berth.

Belton girls steamroll Shoemaker

KILLEEN - The Belton girls maintained their perfect district mark with a 10-0 win over Killeen Shoemaker on Friday night.

The Lady Tigers (17-1-3, 11-0 District 12-5A) will host Copperas Cove on Tuesday.
