Dense fog will cover area

Stacee Gillians, left, and Amanda Slaughter walk to their cars from the Extraco building while rain and wind pelt their umbrellas on Wednesday afternoon in downtown Temple. Today’s forecast calls for a chance of more rain.
Temple and its neighbors missed the hail that fell on Georgetown early Wednesday evening, but a dense fog advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service and will be in effect until 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Today there will be a 50-percent chance of rain and thunderstorms. According to the NWS, some of those storms could be severe. A high of 76 degrees is forecast with south winds between 5 and 15 mph and gusts as high as 20 mph.

Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low around 59 degrees.

Keep the umbrellas handy because Friday will see a 30-percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1 p.m. The wind will pick up again with south-southwest winds 5 to 10 mph becoming west- northwest wind, between 20 and 30 mph and gusts as high as 40 mph.

Visibility may fall to one-quarter mile or less. The fog will slowly lift and burn off this morning. Visibility should be more than one mile by 11 a.m.

The weather service says that drivers should slow down and use their low beam headlights. Another piece of advice they offer is to leave plenty of room between you and the car ahead of you.

Vehicles, especially trucks, going faster than they should in foggy conditions will not have enough time to stop to avoid a collision.

“A person should reduce their speed as safely possible, place their low beam headlights on, and if they have fog lamps turn them on as well,” Morgan’s Point Resort Police Chief Randy Dixon said.

“Attempt to drive routes that will prevent turning across oncoming traffic if at all possible, and leave for your destinations in plenty of time,” Dixon said. “Do not rush, put down the cell phone, giving your driving 100 percent of your attention. Drive as far to the right side of the main traveled portion of the roadway as possible.”
