Former Rockdale, North Texas football player Dawson found shot to death

DENTON - Former Rockdale High School standout and North Texas football player Germaine Dawson was found shot to death Friday morning near an automotive business in the 2400 block of south Interstate 35E, the Denton Record Chronicle reported on its Web site Friday afternoon. He was 21.

Dawson was an honorable-mention all-state linebacker for Rockdale in 2004 and graduated the following spring. He played four seasons at North Texas, making 11 starts and 54 tackles in 2006 and playing 11 games in ’07 before playing only one game last season. He was scheduled to graduate in May.

According to the newspaper’s report, Dawson was reported missing Thursday night by his girlfriend after leaving Denton for Dallas a night earlier and not returning. Police on Friday responded to a call about a white SUV that had been parked near an auto dealership for a couple of days. Lewisville Assistant Police Chief Joni Eddy said Dawson was found in the driver’s seat with an apparent single gunshot wound to the head and that no weapon was found in the vehicle.
