Great Depression: Thriving during a hard time

Aldine B. Carlisle grew up in West Virginia during the Great Depression.

We planted gardens, had peach trees and ate a kind of stew called mush (milk and meal). Our families were large and we all knew how to work hard. We all went to church and played games that gave us plenty of exercise.

The miners made money and my mother let them charge at her store for a month, then they would pay.

We used coal for heat and of course there was plenty of it.

In this little store we made good money. There was no meat, so we sold chickens in our store. I weighed them, Rollie and Rex (my brothers) packed them. This was the way we were able to go to college. I went to Marshall, got my master’s and taught 42 years. I am now retired and live in Temple.
