More rain postpones area baseball action

Rain, rain, go away is the refrain of local sports fans after a second consecutive day of heavy precipitation Saturday caused sloppy field conditions and postponed home baseball games for Temple, Belton, Temple College and Mary Hardin-Baylor.

Fourth-place Temple’s crucial District 12-5A game against fifth-place Killeen Ellison, originally scheduled for Friday night, was moved to Saturday afternoon and then to 7 p.m. Monday at Hallford Field.

After district-leading Belton’s showdown with second-place College Station A&M Consolidated was pushed from Friday night to Saturday night, the two teams of Tigers decided to move their game to 7 p.m. Monday at Belton’s Tiger Field.

That means Temple and Belton will play four games apiece in a span of six days.

The Wildcats are set to host Ellison on Monday and Harker Heights on Tuesday before playing at Bryan on Friday and hosting Belton on Saturday. The Tigers will host A&M Consolidated on Monday, play at Copperas Cove on Tuesday, host Ellison on Friday and play at Temple on Saturday.

In the college ranks, Temple moved its home doubleheader against Weatherford from 3 p.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. today at Danny Scott Sports Complex. The Leopards (32-12, 16-6) entered Saturday with a two-game lead in the Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference.

Meanwhile, UMHB’s regular-season-ending three-game series against Howard Payne was pushed back for the second straight day.

The Crusaders and the Yellow Jackets now plan to play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. today at Red Murff Field in Belton and then a single game at 2 p.m. Monday.

UMHB (19-15 overall, 9-9 American Southwest Conference) will clinch a berth in the ASC Tournament if it sweeps the series but will miss the postseason if it gets swept.

To advance, the Crusaders must finish ahead of Concordia Texas, which swept UMHB and faced a three-game weekend series with Schreiner.
