Belton PD joins Twitter, Facebook

BELTON - That tweet you just heard isn’t a traffic cop blowing a silver whistle to direct traffic.

It’s the Belton Police Department diving into the new communication age. The department is using Twitter to connect with the community, said the department’s new police administrator, Gene Ellis.

One of the first tweets out of Twitter announced hiring information for the department and directed Twitter fans to the city Web site for more details.

Others wish all moms in the area a Happy Mother’s Day, invite people to a memorial ceremony for police officers at the Bell County Courthouse downtown, recognize National Police Week from May 10-16 and give an update on upgrading the computer system to get police reports out faster.

“We see this as a communication tool,” Ellis said. “But it’s not meant to replace the department Web site. It’s simply another way to engage the public.”

Ellis said both Facebook and Twitter tend to have a younger audience. But many Baby Boomers are beginning to use the services, too, he said.

The services have been up for two weeks and Ellis said he is receiving positive feedback.

“One e-mailed me today saying he was glad to see we are using this new technology,” Ellis said.

He said Facebook is advertising an opening for an officer and giving news briefs on department programs.

Ellis said Twitter would be used to let subscribers know when an accident is tying up traffic such as a wreck on Interstate 35, a major fire to route drivers to safer routes or impending emergencies. It can also be used when a child is missing, a vehicle used in a crime is being sought or locating a stolen vehicle.

“It gives us an extra set of eyes and ears. And the best part,” said Ellis, “is that it costs no money. It’s a free service.”

Twitter is a free social networking service that allows a subscriber to receive text message on cell phones of up to 140 characters in real time. Facebook is free also but allows more text plus photographs.
