No. 9 Troy explodes early, often to blast Blooming Grove in playoff opener

WACO - Another opponent, another rout.

At least so far, the postseason is no different for the Troy Trojans.

It took ninth-ranked Troy just two innings to blow its Class 2A area-round baseball playoff wide open and cruise to a 14-4, six-inning win over Blooming Grove on Tuesday night at Waco Little League Complex.

The Trojans (19-4) advanced to the regional quarterfinals for the second straight season and will face Edgewood at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Waxahachie in a one-game playoff, with a berth in the Region II semifinals at stake.

It didn’t take long for the Trojans to get going despite playing their first meaningful game in nearly a month. Troy scored seven runs in the first two innings and capped another run-rule victory in the sixth after third baseman Pablo Martinez singled in the mercy-rule run.

“It was good to play for something that meant something,” said junior catcher Justin Gregory, who was 2-for-3 with three RBI, including a two-run home run in the second inning. “It was good to have a little bit of competition, too.”

Troy got its first five batters on base in the first and led 4-0 before Blooming Grove had recorded an out. After the Trojans added three more runs in the second, including Gregory’s two-run homer to dead center field, the rout was on.

“We talked about getting on them early,” Troy coach Steve Sebesta said. “We thought that’d be to a good advantage to us and it was.”

In all, four Trojans - Jordan Mattke, Gregory, Andrew Hines and Dylan Sebek - had a pair of hits each and every player reached base at least once.

Sebek drove in a pair of runs with a double in the fifth and Hines had a run-scoring single in the fourth.

Ryan Dach had just one hit but reached base in all but one of his at-bats and scored three runs. Zach Lynch reached twice on errors, walked and also scored three runs.

But it was Mattke who swung the Trojans’ hottest bat, driving in five runs, including a bases-clearing double in the first that gave Troy a 4-0 lead.

Just as important, he limited Blooming Grove’s chances to get back in the game time after time. Mattke gave up 10 hits but stranded seven Lions to help the Trojans keep their large lead.

“I thought Jordan did a great job,” Sebesta said. “I’m not so sure he had his ‘A’ game but it’s good to see him be able to win when he doesn’t. I thought he competed well and did what it took fight through it and get the win.”

After their first win since dropping a pair of warmup games, the Trojans say their confidence never dwindled.

And why would it? Especially when they swing the bats like that.

“We know if we play our best game we can beat anybody on any given night,” Mattke said.
